Medina and Kasbah for the Tetouan practical guide
Practical info

Everything you need before visiting Tetouan

Currency, languages, transport, safety, hours, and data — current and local.

Currency & payments

The currency is the Moroccan dirham (MAD). Cash rules in the medina, taxis, and many cafés. Cards work at hotels, supermarkets, and mid/large restaurants.

  • ATMs in the Ensanche, main squares, and shopping centres.
  • Keep small bills for taxis and crafts.
  • Exchange at banks or official bureaux — avoid the street.

Languages

Arabic (darija), Spanish, and French are spoken. English is growing in tourist areas. Tetouan keeps a living Hispanic heritage — many shopkeepers and elders understand and speak Spanish.

Electricity

220 V, 50 Hz. Type C/E (European) sockets. Bring an adapter if coming from UK/USA.

Connectivity & data

WiFi at hotels, cafés, and restaurants. For mobile data, get an eSIM or local SIM (Maroc Telecom, Orange, Inwi) at the airport or downtown.

Getting around

Petits taxis (blue) inside the city — short and cheap. Grand taxis to Martil, M’diq, Tangier, Chefchaouen. CTM and Supratours for long-distance buses. The medina is walking-only.

  • Ask for the meter in petits taxis.
  • Grand taxis leave when full (6 passengers).
  • Useful apps: Heetch / Careem in some areas.

Hours & rhythm

Medina and souks open early and close at sunset. Restaurants: 12:30–15:30 and 19:30–23:00. Friday midday is quieter (prayer). Hours shift during Ramadan.

Safety & etiquette

Tetouan is calm. Watch belongings in crowded spots and ignore pushy touts in the medina. Dress respectfully near mosques and zawiyas. Ask before photographing people.

Best season

Spring (April–June) and autumn (September–October): golden light, ideal weather. July–August: the coast fills with Moroccans and diaspora. Winter: calm medina and lower prices.

Useful numbers

Police 19 · Gendarmerie 177 · Fire 15 · Medical emergencies 141. International code: +212.
