Zawiyas and Spirituality
الزوايا والروحانية في المدينة العتيقة
The spiritual centers that give soul to every neighborhood
What is a zawiya?
A zawiya is a spiritual, educational, and social space deeply rooted in the Islamic tradition of the Maghreb. It is not just a place of prayer: it is a center for gathering, transmitting religious knowledge, collective memory, and often community assistance. In Tetouan's medina, zawiyas are not isolated elements: they are part of the urban fabric, the rhythm of the neighborhood, and the identity of every corner.
Why do they matter?
Each zawiya is linked to a specific neighborhood, a particular history, and a community that cares for it. They are spatial and emotional reference points within the medina: they organize territory, mark symbolic boundaries, and create a sense of belonging.
