1485
Andalusian refoundation
← Back to history
In 1485, Muslim and Jewish families expelled from Spain refounded Tetouan on the ruins of the old city. They brought exceptional artisan skills, Andalusian architectural traditions, and sophisticated urban planning. The medina was built following a plan reflecting Al-Andalus cities: narrow alleys, interior patios, fountains, mosques, and hammams. This Andalusian imprint gives Tetouan a unique identity in Morocco.

Current legacy
Tetouan's medina preserves the Andalusian imprint intact: zellige, woodwork, white alleys, and ornate fountains. This is the main reason for its UNESCO listing.
